You will find that most of these files that are purchased from iTunes Store are DRM protected. This means that you can play these iTune files only on special devices and computer systems. You will not be able to make use of these DRM protected files on any random computer or any other portable media devices or in other terms media players. To overcome this problem all you need to do is convert these iTunes files to a more common digital audio format popularly known as the Mp3 format. This process of conversion from the iTunes formats to mp3 formats wholly depends on whether the files are DRM protected or not.

How to convert non protected files: You can make use of iTunes to convert the media files to Mp3 formats. All you need to do this is to open iTunes and move to ‘Edit>Preferences>advanced>Importing’ and there you need to change the ‘Import Using’ to ‘Mp3 Encoder’. Now you have to save the settings. Now go to the library and right click on a music track and choose the option ‘Convert Selection to Mp3’. If the track is not protected i.e. not DRM protected, then you will be able to convert the file to MP3 format easily. However if the file is DRM protected then will not be able to convert to mp3 format. You will see a pop up message saying the protected track cannot be converted to other formats.

Now let us see how to convert DRM Protected Files to MP3 format: the first step will be to burn the track to a compact disc. You should make sure that you burn an audio cd and not a data cd. Next, make use of iTunes to access the audio cd and then add the media files to the library. Next, right click the media file and select ‘Convert selection to MP3’. In case you have a large number of media files to be converted to MP3 format then you may have to use a CD Emulator to simulate a real CD burner in order to avoid multiple CD-R discs.
